The Best Weekend Getaways from San Diego (A Local’s List)

Orange County is one of many great San Diego weekend getaways

Some weekends I love San Diego so much I never want to leave. And some weekends I need to pack a bag and be somewhere that doesn’t know my name by dinner. Like that weekend when work and adulting and a health scare were doing my head in, and before I knew it I was recouping in a spa in Palm Springs. That’s what this list is. Not a day trip you rush home from (I’ve got a whole guide for those), but a real San Diego weekend getaway, where you book a room and let a new zip code reset you.

San Clemente is an easy weekend trip from San Diego

These San Diego getaways are some of my go-tos, and one I’ve been dying to do. I’ve gone on some solo, some with my girlfriends, and one or two dragging my mom along. So I’m not just pulling names off a map. I’ll tell you the honest drive time, where I’d stay, and who each one is really for. Grab your coffee. Let’s find your next weekend escape.

A Weekend Getaway In a Single Bag

Heading away for a weekend needs to be carefree, relaxed, and zero stress about what to pack. My free custom checklist is the system I wish I’d had years ago. You’ll also get travel tips, inspiration, and the inside scoop when a new article drops.

San Diego Weekend Getaways At a Glance

The best weekend getaways from San Diego are Temecula wine country (1 hour), Julian (1 hour), Laguna Beach (1.5 hours), Palm Springs and Palm Desert (2 hours), Los Angeles (2 hours), Big Bear (3 hours), Baja’s Valle de Guadalupe (2.5 hours), Santa Barbara (4.5 hours), and Las Vegas (a short flight).

What Counts as a Weekend Getaway from San Diego?

A good San Diego getaway is only 1-5 hours away

There are so many places to take a weekend trip from San Diego. But at some point your travel time eats into your weekend time. For this list, I’m counting anything that takes 1 to 5 hours by car, or a short flight, as earning an overnight stay. If you go the driving route, and you know anything about Southern California you know traffic is a thing. Factor that into what time you leave, so your 2-hour trip doesn’t become a 4-hour slog (me heading to LA on a Friday afternoon – do not recommend!).

Some of these also make great day trips. The difference? Don’t worry about that traffic, settle into a hotel, and experience the city by night. You can go a bit slower, take in more sights, and make it feel like a mini-vacation vs a long day away. The vibe is totally different when you turn a day trip into a weekend getaway.

Deciding on how long to stay is up to you. For me, to really settle in and feel the different pace, I like to do at least two nights. You absolutely can do one night only, but your hotel becomes more of a place to drop your bags and rest your head. Two or three nights lets you have a leisurely morning without worrying about checkout, have a full day out and about, and enjoy a nice dinner without the long drive preceding it. Think about what you’re looking for as you decide how long to stay.

The Best Weekend Getaways from San Diego

Below are nine San Diego overnight escapes, each with real drive time, where I’d stay, and the one thing I go for.

A Wine Country Weekend

Temecula Wine Country (1 hr) — Best Girls Weekend

Temecula wine country is a lovely girls trip from San Diego

Temecula makes an excellent San Diego weekend getaway as it’s wine country, and if you decide to sample the local production, you don’t have to worry about a long drive home. Relax at your hotel, wake up and hit some wineries on the wine road, do a little shopping downtown, and head back to a winery for a sunset dinner overlooking the vines. It’s not too far, but far enough that you and your girls will feel like you had a great escape.

  • Drive time: About an hour, maybe 1h15 up I-15 on a Friday
  • Best for: A girls weekend built around wine (and nobody driving), or a couples escape
  • Where I’d stay: On a vineyard, so the tasting room is steps from your room. Ponte Vineyard Inn or Carter Estate for a mid-luxe stay, South Coast Winery Resort & Spa if you want the spa too
  • My one must-do: Book a tasting shuttle or a driver for the day so nobody’s the designated one, then a slow vineyard brunch the next morning

Prefer a day trip? Here’s the day version ->

Valle de Guadalupe, Baja (2.5 hrs) — Best Foodie Splurge

You can easily do a day trip to Tijuana, but if you go a bit farther into Baja, you’ll find amazing discoveries. Like Valle de Guadalupe, a little wine region tucked between Tijuana and Ensenada. It’s been built with an ecological intent, so you’ll find properties with unique architecture and farm-to-table restaurants with top-notch chefs. This is the weekend trip from San Diego that I keep wanting to plan, so stay tuned.

  • Drive time: 2.5 to 3 hours with the border, so cross earlier in the day and know your route
  • Best for: A foodie splurge, especially couples or a small group who love wine and long lunches
  • Where I’d stay: Bruma (the Casa Ocho rooms) or the Endémico ecolofts at Encuentro Guadalupe, both design-forward stays right in the vines
  • My one must-do: A long, no-rush lunch at Finca Altozano or Deckman’s en el Mogor, then hop two wineries before sunset

Head to the Hills

Julian (1 hr) — Best Cozy One-Nighter

Cider tasting is a must-do activity during a weekend getaway in Julian

If you’re craving a change of seasons, Julian is a great bet. It’s not too far away, it’s small enough to do in a day, and yet it has such a different vibe that you feel a million miles away. Whether you go solo, with a partner or with friends, it’s a lovely San Diego weekend getaway.

  • Drive time: About an hour up CA-79
  • Best for: A cozy one-nighter when you want mountain quiet, not luxury
  • Where I’d stay: I’ll be honest, Julian is charming but not fancy. Orchard Hill Country Inn is the nicest in town, otherwise book a proper cabin with a fireplace.
  • My one must-do: Apple pie, warm, no debate. A cider tasting at one of the local breweries. Then do absolutely nothing by the fire.

Prefer doing Julian in one day? Here’s how to do it ->

Big Bear or Idyllwild (2.5 hrs) — Best Cabin-and-Pine Air

There's plenty of places to get fresh mountain air that are a short drive from San Diego

Two other mountain getaways that are a little higher up and a bit further than Julian are Big Bear and Idyllwild. They’ll give you that true mountain air, large pine trees and at Big Bear, a lake to partake in. Whether you decide to boat, swim, or hike amongst the pines, Big Bear delivers. It’s also the home of Shadow, the famous bald eagle whose longtime mate Jackie passed in 2026. He’s since found a new companion, and their nest has a beloved live cam. While you’re better off watching that nest on the live cam, you’ll likely see wildlife soaring overhead and maybe even wandering through town. Idyllwild is a little smaller and rustic than Big Bear, and leans into the arts. Closer to San Diego, but a very different vibe.

  • Drive time: About 3 hours to Big Bear, Idyllwild’s closer to 2
  • Best for: Cabin-and-pine-air people, cozy over glam
  • Where I’d stay: A high-end cabin with a hot tub and a real fireplace beats a hotel up here. In Idyllwild, the boutique inns are lovely.
  • My one must-do: A slow lake morning, then hunker down by the fire. If you time it right to catch the first snow, even better.

Weekend-Getaway Mistakes I’ve made from San Diego

I’ve made the mistakes so you don’t have to!

Underestimating Friday border/freeway traffic. Use Google maps Arrive By feature to gauge the best time to beat traffic.
Not booking Temecula tastings ahead on a Saturday. It’s popular for a reason, and the good spots fill up fast.
Wrong shoes in Julian in winter. Boots are a must-wear. Check the weather in your destination, not just at home.

Cruise Along the Coast

Santa Barbara (4.5 hrs) — Best Slow Coastal Luxe

Santa Barbara gives a slow, Mediterranean feel for a weekend trip from San Diego

Santa Barbara is such a gem. I went to college in San Luis Obispo and so always passed through Santa Barbara on my way home to San Diego and back. It has that traditional Spanish architecture, the beautiful seaside views, and a small-town charm that hides how much it’s actually grown over the years. It’s a bit farther afield but if you can do two or three nights, it’s worth it.

  • Drive time: 4 to 4.5 hours, the long haul on this list, but worth it
  • Best for: Slow, coastal, a little luxe
  • Where I’d stay: Hotel Californian in the Funk Zone or the Kimpton Canary downtown, or El Encanto, a Belmond hotel, up in the hills if you’re going all-in
  • My one must-do: Funk Zone wine tasting, then a State Street stroll and toes in the sand

Laguna Beach (1.5 hrs) — Coastal Luxe Closer to Home

Laguna Beach has a wonderful arts community and stunning coastline

If you want a similar vibe to Santa Barbara without the long drive, Laguna Beach makes for a great overnight trip from San Diego. Just up the coast you’ll feel like you’re on vacation in a Mediterranean artist colony. Stay by the beach, wander through the little town and shops, listen to some live music at night, and maybe even buy some art the area is known for. I just built a weekend trip for a client and her daughter here, and they loved it.

  • Drive time: 1 to 1.5 hours up I-5, one of the easiest on this list
  • Best for: Coastal luxe close to home, a quick reset or a special-occasion girls weekend
  • Where I’d stay: Montage Laguna Beach if you’re going all-in oceanfront, The Ranch at Laguna Beach for a more relaxed canyon-and-beach luxe, or Surf & Sand right on the water.
  • My one must-do: If you visit in the summer, the timing is right to catch the Sawdust Festival during the day and the Pageant of the Masters at night. The former is a huge art show and the latter is a living art exhibit, where humans form into the shapes of famous paintings. It’s something people travel from around the world to see, and it’s right here in our backyard.

How to Make a San Diego Weekend Getaway Actually Restful

A weekend isn’t much time, so a little planning is the difference between rested and wrecked. Here are a few tips for ensuring you come out of your weekend feeling like you had a relaxing holiday.

Leave Thursday night or dawn Friday, not Friday at 5
Book the room before the “we’ll figure it out” spiral
Have one anchor plan a day. Leave room to do nothing

Seek Out That City Energy

Los Angeles / Santa Monica (2 hrs) — Best Culture-and-Shopping Hit

Santa Monica and Los Angeles are great San Diego getaways if you want that city energy

If you’re after more energy, more hustle and bustle, and more swanky city feel, LA is your perfect weekend getaway. LA is huge, so you’ll have to pick your vibe. You can celebrity-spot and shop, hike to the Hollywood sign, luxe out in Malibu, or visit the array of art museums. The options in LA are endless. Just pick an area that is central to all you want to do so that you avoid sitting in that LA traffic the whole weekend.

  • Drive time: 2 hours on a good day, plan 2.5 to 3 into the Westside
  • Best for: A culture-and-shopping hit, and a great girls weekend
  • Where I’d stay: I stayed at the Kimpton Palomar in Beverly Hills and it was the perfect base, right between Beverly Hills, Westwood, and Santa Monica
  • My one must-do: I made a whole grand day of it: Santa Monica beach bliss, a wander through Westwood, Rodeo Drive, and a bagel sample tour I’m still thinking about

Las Vegas (Short Flight) — Best No-Rules Celebration

Anything goes in Las Vegas, only a quick flight away from San Diego for the weekend

Having lived in Las Vegas for ten years, I know a thing or two about the city. I also know about the drive between there and San Diego, as I spent countless hours on the roads coming to and fro for holidays, celebrations, and just a feeling of home. If you want to maximize time and avoid insane traffic, hop a flight. Whether you want time at the slots or tables, a night out in the clubs, or are just looking for fine dining, great shows, and a reason to dress up, Vegas has got something for everyone.

  • Drive time: About 5.5 hours to drive, or a quick 1-hour flight
  • Best for: A no-rules celebration weekend
  • Where I’d stay: The Cosmopolitan for the fountain-view terraces, or the Waldorf Astoria if you want the calm, non-casino luxe
  • My one must-do: One great dinner and one show, then a full pool day to recover

Wondering what there is to do in Las Vegas besides gambling? I’ve got you covered ->

Dip Out to a Desert Escape

Palm Springs & Palm Desert (2 hrs) — Best Pool Reset

Palm Springs is a relaxing desert reset for a weekend away

Palm Springs and Palm Desert are where us coastal Californians go to get a bit more heat, a change of scenery, and a place to relax. The warmth has a way of slowing you down, letting you feel ok about not doing much of anything. Of course you can hike, golf, play tennis, and the like, but you can just as easily lay by the pool and have a restful weekend away. It’s my go-to for an easy escape.

  • Drive time: 2 to 2.5 hours, closer to 3 if you leave Friday afternoon
  • Best for: Pool-and-nothing, and anyone who loves mid-century design
  • Where I’d stay: The Colony Palms or Parker Palm Springs for that iconic boutique vibe, L’Horizon if you want adults-only calm. Over in Palm Desert, the Ritz Carlton in Rancho Mirage or the JW Marriott Desert Springs for a big resort pool scene
  • My one must-do: A full, unhurried pool day, then sunset. If you can pull yourself off the lounger, a mid-century architecture drive-by is worth it

How to Pick the Right Weekend Getaway for Your Group

Where to go depends on who you’re going with and the vibe you’re after. While many of these places work for all types of groups, here’s a little cheat sheet to get you started.

  • Solo reset → Julian or Palm Springs
  • Girls weekend → Temecula or Vegas
  • With mom / multigen → Laguna Beach or Big Bear
  • Couple or first getaway → Valle de Guadalupe or Santa Barbara

Conclusion

Plan your San Diego weekend getaway, or better yet, let me plan it for you

Here’s what I love about living in San Diego. When I need to get out, I’m never more than a couple hours from somewhere that feels like a real trip. Wine, desert, pines, tacos across the border, bright lights, quiet mountains. We really have it all.

Some of my best trips have been close to home. It just shows you don’t have to go far to have a vacation to remember. So pick the one that matches the weekend you need, book the room tonight, and go. You’ll be back by Sunday with your battery full.

Wherever you go, however you do it, I want you to have a trip to remember.

Happy travels, kindreds!
