Best Winter Escapes for Women Who Hate Being Cold: Where to Find Warmth

It’s January, the sun sets at 4:30pm, and you’re convinced you might never feel warm again. If that sounds like your winter reality, you’re not alone – and you don’t have to suffer through it. Warm winter destinations for women like us are within reach!

When I lived in Seattle, everyone had the same annual ritual: frantically planning an escape to somewhere warm (and I was right there with them!) Now that I’m in San Diego, I’m spoiled with sun year-round, but I still crave those strategic warm winter adventures. Because here’s the thing – tropical beach vacays hit different when they’re far from home. And I’ve tested enough destinations to know exactly where to go.

I’ve visited a variety of places that deliver the warmth and soul-satisfying moments I crave. Below you’ll find a few that are organized by not just where to go but what you’re looking for and who you may go with – though, these can easily be adjusted to accommodate different types of travel kindreds.

Pack Smart, Leave Room for the Shopping

Wherever you go to escape the winter blues, you’ll want to travel light on the way there (and leave room for the way back). My free custom checklist makes it easy.

PURE RELAXATION & WELLNESS WARMTH

For the Woman Seeking Rest, Restoration, Unstructured Time + Warmth

Ready to completely unwind? No decisions. No agenda. Just warmth, vitamin sea, and the soul-satisfying gift of doing absolutely nothing. This may be the spot for you.

1. ARUBA (The Ultimate Do-Nothing Escape)

A warm island escape in the Caribbean, Aruba offers a relaxing way to enjoy the warmth. Whether you want a couples escape, a family or friend getaway, or just a solo reset, Aruba fits the bill. It’s the kind of place where you can hang out, lay low, and where doing nothing can actually be healing.

In winter, the beaches are accessible and beautiful without being crowded, the skies are usually clearer than other Caribbean islands, and the temps average 78-82°F. You’re also outside of the hurricane belt, so one less thing to worry about while you get warm! Another perk – visiting in Winter means fewer tourists, leading to more space and more peace for you.

When I visited Aruba with my partner and his extended family, I remember waking up to that perfect 78-degree warmth – no jolt of cold, no shivering – and thinking, ‘This is it.’ Our days looked simple: walks on Eagle Beach where the sand was so soft it felt like powder, poolside reading (I usually bring at least three books with me on beach vacays), and the kind of unstructured dinners where we’d just show up hungry and see what called to us. No reservations needed. No plans. Just warmth, family, and the gift of not having to decide anything.

When we were there, we rented a car and explored the island a bit, but honestly the best part was just being, releasing the stress from back home and letting mother nature heal us with her warmth.

WARM CULTURAL IMMERSION + ADVENTURE

For the Woman Seeking Meaning, Depth, Transformation + Warmth

Want a trip that warms your soul along with your body? This one offers warmth paired with depth. Adventure wrapped in culture. It’s the kind of trip that shifts how you see the world.

2. COSTA RICA (My Lived Experience: Adventure + Culture + Warmth)

Central America, and Costa Rica in particular, make for a wonderful winter escape. Having spent a summer there when I was young, I may be biased, but Costa Rica has always held a soft spot in my heart. Her stunning landscapes, variety of activities, and warmth of the people stay with you long after your time there has ended.

In Costa Rica, winter temps consistently average 70-85°F, not too hot and definitely not too cold! Winter is also the dry season, which gives you the best weather, visibility and most vibrant view of mother nature on display. It’s another location that works for a variety of groups – whether you want to go with family, on a girls trip, solo or with friends, it has the warm weather and memorable vacation payoff you’re looking for.

You want range? Costa Rica delivers. Surfing with world-class waves. Hiking active volcanoes then river rafting through rainforests below. Exploring San Jose’s city energy one moment, then hanging with sloths on a beach the next. (Yes, actual sloths. They’re as chill as they look.) The variety here never feels scattered – it all flows naturally.

Whether you go independently or with an organized trip, you’re guaranteed to have a great time. While you’re there, I highly recommend getting to know the locals. Their friendliness, perspective, and warmth will enhance your trip. Warm days, clear skies, stunning nature scenes, and cultural connections – that is my idea of an excellent winter getaway.

HOT GIRLS TRIP + ADVENTURE

For the Woman Traveling with Close Friends, Seeking Bonding + Activity + Warmth

Have friends that are on the same wavelength? Here’s a perfect warm-weather escape to deepen friendships, create shared memories, and have the kind of adventures that matter.

3. BAHAMAS (Island-Hopping or Beach Base)

The Bahamas is known for crystal clear, turquoise-blue waters, pink sand beaches, and island vibes. And who better to share that with than your crew? Weather-wise, the Bahamas hits the spot too, with average winter temps from 75-80°F – perfect if you hate the cold, or at the very least, are chasing the sun.

The Bahamas also offers a good balance of things to do. Relaxation – cocktails on the beach? Yes please! Adventure – snorkeling with amazing fish or paragliding on Paradise Island? Loved it! Swimming with pigs in Exuma? Still on my list (who wants to come?)

The Bahamas are fairly easy to get to, so if you’re meeting people from different locations, it’s pretty easy to facilitate, especially if you meet in Nassau to start. Winter is also peak for Caribbean warmth, with fewer tourists than you’ll find in summer. Feeling like you have the island a bit more to yourself is a beautiful bonus!

Whether you want to check out shopping, luxuriate at the Atlantis, or find hidden beaches to explore, the Bahamas has it all. I’ve been with family, with friends, and with a partner, and each time, the Bahamas offers a lovely respite from everyday life.

SOLO CONFIDENCE-BUILDING WARM-UP + FAR-OFF EXPLORATION

For the Woman Traveling Alone, Seeking Adventure + Safety + Transformation

If you’re ready to take a solo adventure, winter is a good time to do it! Head somewhere sunny where you can build confidence, seek personal growth and stay warm without sacrificing adventure.

4. AUSTRALIA (Sydney & Beyond)

The jet lag is real – it’s a long flight. BUT here’s the thing: since Australia’s summer (75-85 degrees) = your winter and they’re nearly 24 hours ahead, you’re not fighting a time zone adjustment on top of everything else. You land, you’re tired, you sleep, you wake up refreshed in 75-degree warmth. That’s a win.

Australia is very solo-travel friendly and accessible, with English as the primary language, and is known for its safety and established traveler/backpacker culture. This takes some of the angst out of traveling as you’ll be able to communicate with the locals, understand the menus, and feel safe while you’re sightseeing.

Australia also offers a little bit of everything. I like to say Sydney is as if San Diego and London had a baby – it has that city vibe, but is smaller, more accessible, and set on the sunny sea. The famous Bondi Beach is there if you want surf and seaside swimming pools. The Rocks gives you an old-world market feel right near the harbor. And oh that harbor! Views for days, especially if you climb the Sydney Bridge, like my mom and I did when we were there!

If you want a little more exploration, head north to Brisbane and the Gold Coast, where you can snorkel or scuba on the Great Barrier Reef. Seeing the turquoise water, feeling the vibe shift to more of a surf town, and feeling the sun on your skin is a great way to spend a day or three down under!

SET SAIL + FEEL THE WARMTH OF BEING CARED FOR

For the Woman Who Wants Multiple Warm Destinations with Zero Planning Stress

Ready for a warm winter getaway but not up for dealing with the planning of it all? This could be the ultimate “I hate cold AND I hate planning” escape.

5. CARIBBEAN, MEXICAN OR MEDITERRANEAN WINTER CRUISE

Cruising is a popular secret weapon for women who hate the cold for many reasons. You get to see multiple cities without packing up and moving hotels each day. You have zero decision fatigue – honestly, my most difficult cruise decisions are what to have for dinner and which pool to sit at each day. And it fits a variety of vacation styles – people can join onboard activities, do port tours, or hang solo and read, then meet up for dinner and a show later.

I remember one Mediterranean cruise where I spent the afternoon reading by the pool when we were at sea, joined a shore excursion to a small village in Mallorca the next day, then had zero guilt about skipping the evening show and relaxing in the lounge. That flexibility? It’s gold, especially for women juggling a lot back home.

Picking an itinerary that focuses on warm weather stops is a good winter go-to so you can get 70-80 degree temps, whether you’re with family, your partner, or your friends. I’ve even known people to go on cruises solo – look out for cruises that cater to whatever crowd you’re looking for.

In winter, you’ll get better prices, fewer tourists, and great weather in these ports. If you’re a busy woman who just wants to show up and have everything else taken care of, a cruise could be for you.

CONCLUSION

Winter is coming, but that’s just a date range. It doesn’t mean you have to suffer through it. And hey, you may be the type that finds joy in shoveling snow – I love that for you! But if you’re looking for a little warmth to break up that winter routine, it’s ok to admit that. We all want different things at different times, and that’s ok. I’ll actually be planning a cold winter getaway soon, so no shade – variety is the spice of life! Just remember, winter escape isn’t selfish, it’s self-care.
