The Best Summer Europe Destinations for Women Travelers (2026 Guide)

Cinque Terre is a great place for women to travel in summer

What are the best summer destinations in Europe for women travelers?

The best summer Europe destinations for women travelers are:

🍝 Italy (Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre)

🏖️ Greece (Santorini and Crete)

🍷 Portugal (Lisbon and the Algarve)

☘️ Ireland

🪻Provence, France

Each destination was chosen for scenery, safety track record, solo-travel friendliness, and how genuinely welcoming they are to women travelers.

Summer is right around the corner, and you’re already picturing it – the Mediterranean, a glass of something cold, and cobblestones under your feet. Europe is calling, but the news cycle is loud. Given everything going on in the world, is it safe to go? You’re not alone in second-guessing. These are fair questions, and they deserve a real answer, not a dismissal. The good news is that the best summer Europe destinations for women travelers are still safe, and will deliver the exact experience you are looking for.

Whitewashed houses along Santorini cliffs make it a great summer Europe destination for women travelers

I’ve traveled to all five of these countries, and I recommend them as both a traveler and a travel advisor. Is summer going to be more crowded? Absolutely. But you also get that quintessential European experience. And if you’re traveling with kids or around school breaks, this may be the only time you can go. So let’s take a look at five European destinations that are absolutely worth it this summer, with exactly what you need to know before you go.

Pack Smart, Leave Room for the Shopping

Wherever you head this summer, you’ll want to travel light on the way there (and leave room for the way back). My free custom checklist makes it easy.

What Makes a European Destination Work for Women Travelers?

Every time someone asks me where to send a woman traveling alone for the first time, Europe is almost always the answer. Here’s why. Europe tends to be one of the best summer destinations for women as it is solo-friendly, English is somewhat accessible, and is pretty easy to navigate. It also delivers on the vibe you’re going for – drink wine in the vineyards of Provence, enjoy a day at sea off of Capri, or get a taste of European city life in Lisbon. Each has their own feel, and are the things women’s travel dreams are made of. While it does get crowded in summer, Europe is used to it to a certain extent. I’ve been there through every season of the year, and regardless of crowds, it never disappoints.

Slow, relaxed page along the Cinque Terre makes for a wonderful European vacation

I first visited Europe when I studied in Spain for a year in college, and have been going back ever since. There’s an ease, an accessibility, and a comfort in more walkable, more social, more vibrant ways of living. You slow down and your senses speed up. When you’re surrounded by buildings and ruins and culture that is centuries old, you gain perspective on what a small speck we are on this earth, how young the US really is, and ultimately, what’s important in life. Each time I return I am more relaxed, more mindful, and optimistic that I can embrace the slow, intentional, community-focused living that Europe is known for. With that in mind, here are the five destinations I keep recommending this summer.

1. Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre: Italy’s Best Summer Destinations for Women

If Italy were a feeling, it would be this: the smell of something incredible coming out of a kitchen, golden light on old stone, and the sense that you are exactly where you’re supposed to be. Amalfi and Cinque Terre are that times ten, with their coastal village vibes and amazing seaside views. Sipping aperol spritzes on the seashore, soaking in the sun on your hillside patio, and feeling like you’ve stepped onto a movie set. This makes Italy a place I go back to over and over again.

Stunning views sipping aperol spritzes in Amalfi - the stuff that a woman's summer European travel dreams are made of

Italy is one of the most welcoming European countries for women travelers, with a long history of female tourism and an incredibly food-forward culture that makes every day feel like a celebration. Both areas are extremely well-trafficked – easy to meet people, and very safe, whether you are solo or with a group.

Italy gets a lot of credit for the food and the scenery, and it deserves every bit of it. But for women who also want to move their bodies and feel genuinely alive on vacation? Amalfi and Cinque Terre are something else. I had an amazing time on a family girls trip to Cinque Terre, where we hiked the infamous Cinque Terre trails. Similarly, I flew solo when I visited Amalfi, joining a hiking group to trek the Path of the Gods. The mix of adventure and relaxation make these ideal summer Europe destinations for women.

  • Amalfi vs. Cinque Terre: My advice: choose one. Amalfi for the drama and glamour, Cinque Terre for hiking and authenticity (the trail section between Manarola and Corniglia is closed through 2028 due to landslides, so plan your route around the Corniglia to Vernazza to Monterosso segments, which are open)
  • Best time to go: early June before peak crowds

Travel Advisor Tip

Book accommodation at least 3-4 months out for July/August. Shoulder season (late May/early June) gives you 30-40% lower rates with nearly the same weather.

One thing that catches people off guard: you need a Cinque Terre Trekking Card to hike the main coastal trail, and in 2026 pricing is dynamic and goes up on peak days. Book it in advance at parconazionale5terre.it.

2. Santorini and Crete: Why Greece Works for Women Travelers

Have you ever dreamt of sailing the Greek isles, wearing all white looking chic while the blue sea provides a stunning backdrop? Then Santorini and Crete are your best Europe summer destination choice. Santorini may be popular, but it’s popular for a reason. And Crete? Well Crete is one of the most affordable Greek islands and arguably the best for women who want culture alongside beach time.

Greece is great for women travelers. Tourism is the economy here, and visitors are genuinely welcomed. For solo travelers, it’s very easy to get around, and English is widely spoken in tourist areas. And for girls trips? Well these islands deliver on that iconic summer European vacay your girl’s chat has been dreaming about.

My friend and I on our girls trip to Santorini, celebrating after our hike from one end of the island to the other

When my mom, her best friend and my best friend did a girls trip to Greece years ago, the islands were one of our highlights. Jumping in the hot springs in the sea, hiking the island tip to tip on the ridge in Santorini, and wandering the small white-washed streets was pure magic, and all our worries washed away with the sea breeze.

  • Why two islands? Santorini is for the iconic photos and sunset romance, while Crete gives you the local life, beaches, and a better value
  • Best time to go: Santorini in July/August is extra crowded – I recommend June or September for a better experience

Travel Advisor Tip

Consider flying into Athens and doing 3 nights in Athens + one island, rather than two islands. Athens is underrated and gives the trip more depth.

Ferry tickets from Athens (Piraeus) to Santorini start around €57 on Blue Star and over €109 on high-speed SeaJets. Book in advance for July/August as high-speed ferries sell out. Ferry prices don’t fluctuate like airfares, so booking early secures your spot without costing you more, but high-speed ferries and cabins can sell out weeks ahead in peak season.

3. Lisbon and the Algarve: Why Portugal Is a Top Summer Destination for Women

Portugal is consistently one of the best-value Western European countries. It’s one of the cheapest European countries to visit in summer while still offering world-class food, scenery, and infrastructure. It’s charming without being precious about it.  Lisbon has an edge that other European capitals don’t. As a travel advisor, Portugal is one of the destinations I get asked about most for women’s groups, and for good reason.

Bold architecture brings Lisbon to life

On top of that, the practicalities are covered. Portugal has a strong safety record, English is widely spoken, and it’s safe for women travelers. I first visited Portugal in college when I lived in Spain. Four of us did a girls trip and we drove all through the country, Lisbon and the Algarve included. As the one who knew how to drive a stick shift, I was the designated driver. Believe it or not, it wasn’t as scary as you might think – that one pesky parking ticket in Lisbon not included. A huge thank you to the kind women in the hotel who, when I asked where I could pay my ticket, laughed and told me to throw it away. Not sure that would fly these days, but it gave us a good laugh back then.

  • Why two places? Why not get two experiences in one trip: Lisbon for city culture, hills, tiles, and nightlife; and the Algarve for the most dramatic sea cliffs in Europe. It’s easier to do than you think – they’re only a 2-3 hour drive apart, or easily accessible by train.
  • Best time to go: May through June or September, as the Algarve in July and August is beautiful but hot and crowded

Travel Advisor Tip

Fly into Lisbon, spend 3 nights in the city, then rent a car and drive south to the Algarve. Return flight from Faro. This routing avoids backtracking and lets you see two completely different sides of Portugal.

The train from Lisbon’s Oriente station to Faro takes about 3 hours on the Alfa Pendular express, with tickets starting at €25.60. Book directly through Comboios de Portugal (cp.pt) for the best prices.

Toll roads note: if you take the car route, know that the A2 highway uses electronic toll collection by license plate photo, so if you’re renting a car, ask the rental agency about a pre-paid toll option to avoid surprise fines later.

4. Ireland: The Most Underrated Summer Europe Destination for Women

Ireland is consistently underrated on ‘best summer Europe’ lists for women, and it shouldn’t be. It’s a country that offers human warmth, stunning scenery, and has the English-speaking advantage: no language barrier means deeper conversations, easier navigation, less mental work – though you still may need some to work out the accents. 🙂

Dublin is a social city, making it ideal for women travelers during the summer, or any time of year

I must say, out of all the countries I’ve visited, Ireland stands out as one of the most friendly places. Irish hospitality is not a cliche – locals will genuinely talk to you in a pub for three hours, and it’s grand! That helps make it one of the most female-friendly European countries to visit, with English spoken everywhere and a culture of genuine hospitality that makes solo women travelers feel immediately welcome. It’s extremely safe, easy to get around by car (essential for the countryside), and has an excellent hostel and B&B culture.

When my ex-husband and I went, we rented a car, spent some time in Dublin and then roamed. We had friends there that made our visit all the more special, but you can easily do this on your own. From the Wild Atlantic Way and Ring of Kerry, to the Cliffs of Moher, Dingle Peninsula, and Galway city, there’s plenty of variety to see.

  • Summer weather note: ok, this is not your spot if you want the beach vacay or sunny skies every day. It’s green for a reason, which comes from a wee bit of rain. So pack layers and be prepared to get the full Irish experience
  • Best time to go: the green is at its best in June/July

Travel Advisor Tip

Rent a car. Public transport is limited outside Dublin and you will miss the best parts of Ireland if you don’t drive. Remember: left side of the road. Take it slow the first day and you’ll be fine.

Good news is that international driving licenses are not required for US citizens in Ireland (valid US license accepted), but you do need to verify your rental car agreement covers driving in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland if you plan to cross the border, as many standard rentals exclude it.

On accommodation: B&Bs and smaller guesthouses in the countryside book out early for June and July, particularly along the Wild Atlantic Way. Recommend booking at least 3 months out for summer travel.

5. Provence, France: The Best Summer Europe Destination for Women Who Want to Slow Down

Provence is for women who want to actually exhale on vacation. Lavender fields and vineyards, a laid back yet sophisticated feel without even trying. It’s a slower, more sensory European experience – think markets, lavender fields, wine, and the kind of long lunches that remind you why you travel in the first place.

Lavender fields in Provence are just one reason it's one of the best summer Europe destinations for women travelers

Provence is safe for women, whether solo or with a group, and sometimes you feel as if you have the whole countryside to yourself. If you like rose or lavender, this is a done deal. Provence produces the best rosé in the world and it costs almost nothing locally.

When I want adventure in France, I head to the Alps. Provence is the next trip on my list, and based on everything I know about it as a travel advisor, here’s why it keeps making my list. Plan your days visiting the morning markets in L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue or Aix-en-Provence, your afternoons sipping wine in the Luberon, and each day visiting new villages like Gordes and Les Baux.

  • What about Paris? Paris gets a lot of the glory when we talk about visiting France, but the smaller towns should not be overlooked. Some of my favorite trips in France were to small towns that have a slower vibe, more charm, and allow you to just be, just breathe. Provence is a perfect representation of that.
  • Best time to go: Lavender season is late June through mid-July, when it is in peak bloom – plan around this if it’s on your list. As mother nature tends to do, lavender bloom timing shifts year to year based on temperature. The best way to check conditions before you go is searching Instagram hashtags like #lavandeluberon filtered to “recent” and checking post dates carefully. Only trust posts from the current season.

Travel Advisor Tip

Base yourself in one village and day-trip rather than moving around constantly. The Luberon region (Gordes, Roussillon, Bonnieux) is a perfect central base. Rent a car and let yourself get a little lost.

Parking at popular lavender field viewpoints on the Valensole Plateau fills by 8-9 AM on peak July weekends. Go early morning or late afternoon for better access and better light for photos anyway.

Planning Your Summer Europe Trip

For women planning Europe travel in 2026, here are some things you’ll want to lock in:

Summer Europe Travel Tips

When to go: for most of these destinations, late May through mid-June and September hit the sweet spot – good weather, lower prices, and crowds that haven’t peaked yet
When to book: 4-6 months out for flights in peak season (June/July/August), 3 months for shoulder months
Travel insurance: always, but especially important right now – it covers cancellation and medical. Contact me if you’d like more information
Packing for summer Europe: lightweight layers for Provence and Ireland, linen and breathable fabric everywhere, and comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable. Try out my 4-3-1 packing system and you’ll be set
Currency and budget notes: Portugal and Ireland are easier on the budget than Italy and France; Greece varies by island
Solo travel safety note: keep a copy of your passport separate from the original; share your itinerary with someone at home

A Note on Traveling to Europe Right Now

A lot of women have been asking me about this, and I want to give you an honest answer. Americans have been traveling to these destinations for decades. Tourism is the lifeblood of these communities. You are welcomed. It is still safe for women to travel in Europe right now, whether solo or with family or friends.

Sunset views in Sorrento while solo - feeling safe in this city on my own

Of course, always be respectful of the locals and their culture, try your best to blend in with locals, and avoid doing things that may increase your risk – going into unsafe areas, staying out all night if you are solo, or causing a big scene with people or in public. This is common-sense for life, but sometimes that vacation spell makes people forget and throw all caution to the wind (I’ve been guilty, raising my hand over here).

It’s always smart to check the State Department travel advisories before you go, get travel insurance that covers cancellation, and stay informed on the latest events. At the same time, don’t let headlines make decisions for you, as they tend to exaggerate. None of this means don’t go. It means go prepared. There’s a difference.
