Best Spring Break Destinations for Women 35–60 (That Aren’t Cancun)

view over Taormina during spring in Sicily

I was sitting at a seaside bar in Cadiz, Spain, sangria in hand, watching the sea go gold at sunset, reflecting on our last visit when we celebrated Carnival there, and I thought: this is what spring break should feel like. That was back in college when I lived in Spain. Spring break was a THING. What to do, where to go, what are the best spring break destinations — the buildup alone was half the fun.

But today? Today is a little different. We still want to travel for spring break. Maybe we’re going with kids. Maybe we’re going solo. Either way, spring break is still a thing for us, it just looks different now. We’re not chasing all-inclusives with a DJ at 2pm. We want warmth, beauty, fewer crowds, good food, maybe a glass of something local.

Whether you’re planning a girls trip, a family trip or going solo, the spring break destinations available are so much better than you think. Here’s a look at nine destinations at home and abroad, grouped by vibe – for the culture lover, the adventure seeker, and the girlfriend getaway – spanning international bucket list trips to domestic long weekends. Cancun had its moment. We’ve moved on.

Spring break is just one kind of girls trip. For every vibe, plus how to plan one, see my full girls trips guide →

Why Spring Break Hits Different When You’re in Your 40s and 50s

Sonoma is a perfect spring break destination

As we get older, our priorities shift. No longer looking for the biggest party, sometimes we just want a break from adulting. A place to relax. Or a way to see something new, have a fresh experience. It’s more about taking a breath from real life than a collective break between school sessions. It’s still our permission slip to have fun – just in an entirely different way.

If you’re planning with kids, your timing is locked in around their break. If you’re planning without kids, spring break timing is still actually ideal. Late March/early April is shoulder season almost everywhere, meaning lower prices, smaller crowds, better weather than peak summer heat.

And perhaps the best part? You can afford the good stuff now, and you actually know what the good stuff is. This is your era. Whether you go solo or with your girls, spring break is more fun in this chapter.

Spring Break Destinations For the Culture Lover

These spring break destinations reward those who want depth, history, and immersion.

Japan – Cherry Blossom Season

spring in Japan during cherry blossom season is beautiful

There is nothing – nothing – on this earth quite like Japan in cherry blossom season. I can still vividly see the cherry blossoms lit up all around us at Nijo Castle during a Cherry Blossom Festival in Kyoto. I am still struck by wonder at being completely engulfed with cherry blossoms on Miyajima Island as we walked along the cherry blossom trail. Even our guide said it was the most magical thing he’d seen, and he lives there!

Why spring specifically: Late March through mid-April is sakura (cherry blossom) season – one of the most spectacular natural events in the world. Yes, crowds exist, but they’re celebratory crowds, not resort crowds. The energy is electric.

What to do:

  • Cherry blossom picnics (hanami) in Tokyo’s Shinjuku Gyoen or Kyoto’s Maruyama Park
  • Philosopher’s Path in Kyoto when blossoms are at peak
  • Day trip to Nara — deer park + blossoms is an unforgettable combination
  • Teamlab Borderless or Planets for a modern counterpoint to ancient temples

Who it’s perfect for: Solo travelers (Japan is one of the safest, most solo-friendly countries in the world), girls trips, bucket list seekers

Insider Tip

Book accommodations 3–4 months in advance minimum – cherry blossom season is the most sought-after travel window in Japan. Ryokan stays in Kyoto sell out first.

Seville & Andalusia, Spain – Semana Santa and Feria Season

Sevilla Is a fantastic spring break destination

If you’ve never been to Seville in spring, you’ve never really seen Seville. Seeing the town come together for the Feria de Abril – one of the greatest festivals in Europe – stops you in your tracks. There I was, dressed in my flamenco gown, visiting casetas and toasting sherry with friends. It’s a way to get deeper into a culture than you would any other time of year.

Why spring specifically: Semana Santa (Holy Week, late March/early April) and Feria de Abril are two of the most extraordinary cultural events in Europe — back to back, same city. Spring temperatures are perfect before summer heat arrives.

What to do:

  • Semana Santa processions through the old city (plan around the schedule — some nights are more powerful than others)
  • Feria de Abril — flamenco, horses, sherry, casetas if you can get an invitation
  • The Alcázar and its spring gardens
  • Day trips to Granada, the white villages of Andalusia or sherry tasting in Jerez

Who it’s perfect for: Culture seekers, solo travelers, girls trips

Insider Tip

The week before Holy Week often hits the sweet spot – festive energy without peak Semana Santa crowds. If you want the full feria experience, go all in; if you want Seville without the chaos, go just after.

Oaxaca, Mexico – The Cancun Antidote

City streets of Oaxaca

Still Mexico. But a completely different world. I’ve heard amazing things about Oaxaca (the culture, the sights, the food), and everything I know about it tells me spring is the ideal time to go.

Why spring specifically: Spring sits between winter dry season and summer rains — ideal weather, manageable crowds before peak summer. Archaeological sites are far more comfortable than in summer heat.

What to do:

  • Mezcal tasting at a local palenque (not a tourist bar)
  • Monte Albán ruins at opening — arrive early, nearly to yourself
  • Hierve el Agua petrified waterfall
  • A full-day mole cooking class — the real thing takes all day and is worth every minute
  • The zócalo at night — sit, eat tlayudas, watch the world go by

Who it’s perfect for: Solo travelers, small girls groups, culture and food seekers, anyone who wants Mexico without the resort strip

Insider Tip

Stay in a boutique hotel in the historic centro — it changes the entire experience. Budget: you can do Oaxaca beautifully for far less than a Cancun resort.

Spring Break Destinations For the Adventure Seeker

If you want to move your body, be in nature, and come home feeling like you actually did something, these spring break destinations are for you.

The Azores, Portugal – Europe’s Best Kept Secret

The Azores are a hidden gem and perfect in spring

Volcanic lakes, whale watching, dramatic cliffs — and almost no one has heard of it yet. Everyone talks about Lisbon, and yes, it’s wonderful. But the Azores offer something totally different: more adventurous, more distinctive, and far less expected. I enjoyed a spring break girls trip through Portugal many years ago, and if I did it again, the Azores would be the place I’d start.

Why spring specifically: Prime whale watching season opens in spring (blue and sperm whales migrating through). Hydrangea season is beginning. The weather is mild before summer crowds arrive. Genuine sweet spot.

What to do:

  • Whale watching from Pico or Faial island
  • Hiking around Sete Cidades — twin lakes in a volcanic crater
  • Soaking in natural hot springs at Furnas
  • Island hopping between São Miguel, Pico, and Faial

Who it’s perfect for: Adventure seekers, nature lovers, solo travelers, anyone who wants to be the person in their friend group who discovered something new

Insider Tip

São Miguel is the most visited and a great home base, but add at least one night on Pico or Faial. The islands feel like different countries.

Sedona, Arizona – Red Rocks, Wildflowers, and a Serious Reset

Sedona is beautiful in the spring

Sedona in spring is what happens when the desert decides to show off. The reddest rocks. The bluest sky. The energy? Off the charts. You can hike to the top of Bell Rock, have a seat and take in the beauty that surrounds you. I did this a few years ago, and it was so surreal to be at an energy vortex, taking a break for a mini-meditation seated on a bed of red rock hundreds of feet up in the air. It’s one reason Sedona stays at the top of my ideal quick getaway list.

Why spring specifically: March and April bring wildflowers across the red rock landscape. Temperatures are perfect for hiking before summer heat makes trails brutal. The light is extraordinary.

What to do:

  • Cathedral Rock or Bell Rock trail for iconic views (moderate, very doable)
  • Slide Rock State Park for a playful afternoon
  • Vortex sites — even skeptics find them peaceful
  • Spa day at Enchantment or L’Auberge — legitimate girls trip option

Who it’s perfect for: Solo travelers seeking a reset, wellness-focused girls trips, active travelers, anyone within driving distance of Phoenix

Insider Tip

Insider tip: Arrive at trailheads by 7am in spring. Parking fills fast and the early light is worth it anyway.

Costa Rica – Dry Season’s Final Act

Costa Rica is an outdoor lover's dream spring break destination

The Pacific is calm, the wildlife is everywhere, the people are amazing. I spent a summer in Costa Rica, and it left a mark. Community gatherings in San José. Hiking Arenal, then jumping in a raft to ride the rapids downstream. Lazy days at the beach in Jaco and fun evenings at the local beach bars. There’s so much to do in Costa Rica, you will never be bored.

Why spring specifically: Dry season runs through April — the tail end of the best weather window. Lush from recent rains but without the downpours. Wildlife is active and trails are accessible.

What to do:

  • Manuel Antonio — wildlife spotting (sloths, monkeys, scarlet macaws) + beautiful beach
  • Arenal volcano — hot springs, hanging bridges, zip-lining
  • Uvita and Marino Ballena National Park’s famous whale tail beach
  • A coffee plantation tour or cooking class for a cultural layer

Who it’s perfect for: Active travelers, nature lovers, solo women, girls trips of all activity levels

Insider Tip

Skip the big resort towns and stay in eco-lodges where possible. The experience is completely different and you’re closer to the wildlife.

Spring Break Destinations For the Girlfriend Getaway

These spring break destinations are for the trip your group chat has been trying to plan for six months. Beautiful settings, great food and wine, high memory-making potential, and lower logistics stress.

Sicily, Italy – Wildflowers, Ancient Ruins, and the Best Food of Your Life

Sicily in spring is Italy before the tourists arrive — and the food will ruin you for everywhere else. Sitting in Taormina, watching the sunrise above the sea from my room, is a birthday memory I won’t forget. Hiking Mt. Etna. Savoring chocolate in Modica. Sipping Nero d’Avola near Marzamemi. Long patio dinners on Ortigia Island. Watching a Greek tragedy play in an open-air theater in Siracusa. Sicily has a way of maximizing your five senses.

Why spring specifically: Wildflowers blanket the countryside through April. Summer heat hasn’t arrived. Prices are lower and the island feels authentically itself.

What to do:

  • Palermo street food tour — arancini, panelle, sfincione, cannoli from the source
  • Valle dei Templi at golden hour — ancient Greek temples in a wildflower field
  • Taormina for the view, the shopping, and granita breakfast culture
  • A Sicilian cooking class — the Arab-Norman influences make it unlike anywhere else in Italy
  • Salt flats at Marsala at sunset

Who it’s perfect for: Girls trips, food and wine lovers, history seekers, anyone who wants Italy without Rome’s crowds

Insider Tip

Fly into Palermo, out of Catania (or vice versa) to see the whole island without backtracking. Rent a car – it’s the only way to really see Sicily.

Charleston, South Carolina – Azaleas, Architecture, and a Really Good Cocktail

Charleston has colorful homes and southern charm

Charleston in spring is so beautiful it almost feels unfair (or so I’ve been told). The flowers, the architecture, the slower pace with that quintessential Southern charm. It’s been on my list for a while, and honestly? Next spring might be the year.

Why spring specifically: Azalea season peaks in late March/early April. Temperatures are perfect before summer humidity arrives. This is Charleston at its absolute finest.

What to do:

  • Rainbow Row and the historic district on foot — best in morning light
  • Middleton Place or Magnolia Plantation for azalea gardens
  • Sunset Harbor cruise
  • King Street for cocktails, shopping, and dinner
  • Day trip to Kiawah Island for a beach afternoon

Who it’s perfect for: Girls trips, food lovers, history buffs, domestic travelers who want serious charm

Insider Tip

Book restaurants 3–4 weeks in advance for weekend dinners. Charleston’s dining scene punches well above its size and reservations go fast in spring.

Sonoma or Willamette Valley Wine Country – The Long Weekend That Feels Like a Full Vacation

Sonoma is a great spring break getaway with the girls

Sometimes the best spring break is the one that requires no passport and a very good corkscrew. Napa and Sonoma give you a variety of options. You can taste exceptional wine and dine at some of the best farm-to-table restaurants in the country. It’s easy to get outside and hike amongst the vineyards. You can do what my friends and I do when we go, and do a combination of all of these. It’s the ultimate slow-paced, chill escape. Proof that quality doesn’t have to mean stuffy. Come as you are, come comfy, and leave with a happy palate.

Why spring specifically: Wildflower season, rolling green hills before summer dry season, tasting rooms are quieter and staff have more time for you. Spring menus at winery restaurants are exceptional.

What to do:

  • 2–3 tasting rooms per day maximum (quality over quantity)
  • Farm-to-table dinner at a winery restaurant
  • A morning hike before tastings to feel virtuous about the afternoon
  • Spa afternoon at a resort property
  • A cheese pairing or cooking class for something beyond wine

Who it’s perfect for: Girls trips, anyone within driving distance of Northern California or Oregon, the “I only have a long weekend” traveler, groups that want luxury without international logistics

Insider Tip

Willamette Valley in Oregon is less discovered than Sonoma, often more affordable, and equally stunning for pinot noir. Worth considering if your group wants to feel like they found something.

Tips for Planning Your Spring Break Trip

sunset views in Taormina in spring

Here are some things to keep in mind when selecting from all the spring break destinations and planning your trip, whether it’s for a girls trip, solo, or with your fam:

Spring Break Travel Tips

Book 8–10 weeks out — shoulder season properties fill faster than people expect, especially Japan in cherry blossom season (book 3–4 months out)
Passport check — if yours expires within 6 months of your travel date, renew now; processing times are still elevated
Pack for shoulder season — layers matter; spring weather in Europe and Japan surprises people with cool evenings even when days are warm
Consider a travel advisor — if you’re too busy to do the planning or are intimidated by trips farther afield, a travel advisor can help. Spring travel to Japan and Europe especially benefits from curated properties, preferred rates, and on-the-ground expertise
Travel insurance — shoulder season means better deals but weather disruptions are more common in spring; definitely worth it (reach out and I can help you find the right policy)
Solo vs. group — intrigued by these spring break destinations but can’t get your girls together? No worries – these work for solo travelers, too. How to Start Traveling Solo has everything you need to get started.
